Community supported agriculture is a great thing. We belong, as you likely know from earlier entries at Cooking with Ideas to a CSA from Fellenz Family Farms. This summer we are also CSA members for Maggie's Greens, which are picked up at Monaco's Coffee Shop in Geneva on Thursdays around noon. Maggie's Greens provides micro greens and salad mixes.
What about Maggie's Greens? Here are a few comments:
- The greens vary each week and have included micro lettuce, sunflower seeds, spicy sprouts which I think were radish sprouts, pea shoots, and more. They hold well and are very tasty no matter what is provided. I admit that I am not a huge fan of greens and was not enthused when my partner announced we would get a share. Yesterday, we agreed to do a Fall share. I love these greens and they are having a salutary effect on my diet. Thank you thank you thank you. Now I can appear healthy and also enjoy my salad.
- At the outset, I would have said that the pick up can, on occasion, be odd -- once in a while there was a late notice that there would be no pick up. This got straightened out! Partly, the issue was not having the emails and instagrams myself -- and partly it was the impact of weather.
- You can also pick up in Seneca Falls I think -- check out their website. In Geneva, one just waltzes into Monaco's and reaches into the cooler and takes the bit labeled with one's last name!
- Our greens come in a plastic (recyclable) container. I know, I know, every CSA has to start somewhere and I look forward to an alternative as the CSA builds its success. Get a share so they have more income so they will move away from plastic. (And, if I am wrong and there is a good reason for this, I am sure someone will enlighten me in the comments.)
- Their greens are served in various local restaurants including Stan's in Waterloo, HJ Stead in Geneva, and elsewhere. Check them out there?!?!
- Have I said the greens are amazing? And I am not a huge lover of greens! Or I was not. Now I might be -- at least of Maggie's Greens.
I do urge you to sign on. Yep. I do.
